2026 Ngāti Tai ki Tua Rangatahi Wānanga | Expressions of Interest

We're pleased to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) for our rangatahi wānanga this Raumati/Summer.

The 4-day wānanga spans Auckland Anniversary weekend, 23-26 January 2026 and will be a Taiao/environment focussed outdoor camp for 10-18 year olds. Spaces are limited.

RANGATAHI EOI

Expressions of Interest close Friday 24 October.

To be eligible:

Rangatahi must be 10-18 years old (in 2026).
Their parent/legal guardian must be a registered Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi member.
Rangatahi must be able to camp for all 3 nights / 4 days, potentially without their parents/legal guardians present.
Rangatahi must want to be there and be willing to participate in all activities.
Given the nature of this outdoor camp we are limited in our ability to support high medical or behavioural needs.

PARENT HELPER EOI

If you've submitted an EOI on behalf of your tamaiti/tamariki and you would like to put yourself forward as a potential parent helper, please fill in this form.

This wānanga will be a Taiao/environment focussed outdoor camp requiring a degree of independence and resilience from rangatahi, as well as significant support and supervision from staff and parent helpers.

There will be limited spaces for parent helpers, so those with the following experience/certifications will be preferred:

Current First Aid
Full Drivers Licence
Clean Criminal Background Check
Able to camp for all 3 nights / 4 days, supporting the running of the camp and supervision of rangatahi

2025 Motutapu Volunteer Planting Season | September 14 RSVPs now closed

UPDATE

Due to the March for Humanity on the Auckland Harbour Bridge on the 13th September potentially impacting logistics around the waterfront, we are moving this planting day to Sunday 14th September .

If you have already received a confirmation, please check your email again for updated details and please let us know if you can no longer make this date.

Registrations for this planting day are now closed as we have received a high level of registrations and now have an extensive waitlist

This is the last of our community volunteer planting days for the 2025 season, so make sure you come along and contribute to the collective mahi being done to restore Motutapu as a sanctuary for taonga species, which has already seen over 10,000 rākau planted this year alone!

All ages are welcome (though please note, if you bring your children, you take full responsibility for their supervision) and no experience is required - and as always, transport on the Explore boats and lunch are on us.

Pick ups will be from the Viaduct (approx. 8.30am) and Stanley Point (approx. 8.45am), with the return trip departing from Motutapu at 4.00pm.

PS: Think you could pull together a decent-sized group of people from your workplace to volunteer as a corporate group in the meantime? We’re looking to host a few corporate planting days in the lead up to September 14, so send us an email at volunteer@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz to discuss options.

We're pleased to announce that registrations are open for our 2025 Beginner and Intermediate Online Reo & Tikanga Programmes!

BEGINNERS PROGRAMME – HE KARORO INU KI UTA

Foundation Reo and Tikanga, for those who are new to te Reo Māori or have had limited experience. By Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, for Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki.

Tuesdays, 6pm – 8pm
19 August – 7 October 2025

I NTERMEDIATE PROGRAMME – HE MATUKU MOANA KI TAI

Designed for iwi members who are confident with basic sentence structures and vocabulary, and are ready to deepen their knowledge of Te Reo me ngā Tikanga.

Wednesdays, 6pm – 8pm
20 August – 8 October 2025

Both programmes cover the following, with the intermediate programme providing a deeper dive and including more delivery in te reo Māori:

Karakia, Karanga & Pao
Whaikōrero & Mihimihi
Waiata & Haka
Kawa & Tikanga o te Marae
Pronunciation, grammar, sentence structures, and whakataukī
Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki hītori, pūrākau, and whakapapa

Our 10th Reo & Tikanga Wānanga is taking place over Matariki!

Kicking off on Thursday evening, the first part of the wānanga will focus on preparing us for hautapu on Saturday morning, welcoming in the new year together.

As always, this wānanga will be a safe space for all iwi members of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki to learn and develop their Reo and Tikanga on their marae with their whānau.

So whether you're wanting to deepen your understanding of Matariki, develop your Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Reo and Tikanga, or connect with whānau over the new year, we hope you'll be joining us this Matariki - RSVP at the link below!

A detailed programme will be sent out to whānau who have RSVPed closer to the wānanga.

Although we encourage everyone to take part in the wānanga to get the most out of our hautapu ceremony, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whānau who can't make it to the wānanga are still welcome to join us on Saturday morning to observe the rising of Matariki.

Please bring some kai for shared breakfast after the pre-dawn hautapu ceremony. More information about the hauptau ceremony will be sent to those who RSVP.

Calling all descendants of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki!

We are excited to announce our first Reo & Tikanga Wānanga for 2025. As people of the ‘tai’ (sea), this wānanga will be centred on hī ika me āna tikanga (fishing and the different methods).

Please note: one of the activities available during this wānanga includes heading out on a fishing boat. Spaces on the boat are limited and will be allocated on a first-in, first-served basis. You can indicate your interest in joining the boat in the RSVP form, so make sure you fill that in quick if you are interested in this activity. There will be alternative fishing activities back at the marae for those who don’t go out on the boat.

As always, this wānanga will be a safe space for all iwi members of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki to learn and develop their Reo and Tikanga on their marae with their whānau.

Due to the impact this week of tangihanga for our Umupuia whānau, and illness, we are no longer able to facilitate the wānanga delivery. We don’t take these decisions lightly, and hope you understand.

You must be at least 18 years old.
You must have access to a digital device (e.g., a computer, laptop, or smartphone), a stable internet connection, and a commitment to attend all online lessons.

2024 Motutapu Volunteer Season | September 28 RSVPs now open

We're pleased to announce that our fourth and final planting day on September 28th is now open for registrations!

We had such a good time at the August planting day that we couldn't say no to one more - this time it really is our final planting day for the 2024 season, so make sure to RSVP sooner rather than later so you don’t miss out!

These days are a great way to contribute to the restoration of Motutapu as a sanctuary for taonga species. All ages are welcome (though please note, if you bring your children, you take full responsibility for their supervision) and no experience is required - and as always, transport on the Explore boats and lunch are on us.

Join our second wānanga hauora and help shape the future of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki health and wellbeing.

Building on the invaluable insights we gained from our first wānanga hauora held in early May, this is an opportunity for our whānau to shape the development of a Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki hauora strategy, which will be a cornerstone of our work in the future.

Saturday 6th July, 2024, 9am - 5pm.

Umupuia Marae, 163 Maraetai Coast Road, Clevedon 2582.

What:

At this wānanga, we'll go over the themes that came through from the first wānanga and provide an update on the rest of our hauora research, in order to seek whānau input and feedback while we progress with developing an iwi hauora strategy.

Join our first wānanga hauora and help shape the future of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki health and wellbeing. What we work on together at this wānanga will help us develop our hauora strategy and become a cornerstone of our future wellbeing mahi.

What contributions can the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki organisations make to iwi hauora?
How can we promote iwi hauora in the years to come? What strategies would support that?

This wānanga is part of He Paringa Tai, a research project aimed at developing a Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki hauora strategy that is built upon the voice of our people.

He Paringa Tai is one of two strands that make up a wider hauora research programme, Ngāi Tai Whakaora, being undertaken by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki in 2024.

Calling all our uri o Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki!

Following the success of our pilot programme, this is an opportunity for the first 30 Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki members to be part of our first official eight-week beginner online Reo & Tikanga Programme!

When:

Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm
Start date: Thursday 11 ^th April 2024
End date: Thursday 6 ^th June 2024 (Note: No lesson on ANZAC day 25 ^th April 2024)

What will be covered:

Karakia, karanga and pao, whaikōrero and mihi, waiata and haka, kawa and tikanga o te marae, pronunciation, basic grammar, sentence structures, kīwaha, whakataukī.

Note:

This course is for iwi members who are beginners or who are already familiar with some simple te reo Māori kupu and phrases, and want to improve or deepen their understanding of Te Reo me ngā Tikanga.

The requirements to apply:

You must be a registered Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi member. You must be at least 18 years old. You must have access to a digital device (e.g. a computer, laptop, or smartphone), a stable internet connection, and a commitment to attend all online lessons.

This is an exclusive opportunity for a maximum of 30 people – so it will be first in, first served. You will receive a response by 6pm, Monday 8 ^th April to let you know if your application has been successful. The brave young children of Taikehu

Are you aged between 21 and 28 years old, and wanting to be supported in truly bringing out all of your potential?

Every year, Rotary District 9920 (comprised of clubs in Central, Eastern and South Auckland as far as Tuakau and including the Pacific Islands of Samoa, Fiji, Rarotonga, Vanuatu and French Polynesia) supports a contingent of rangatahi/taiohi in a week long experiential live-in programme designed to help young people develop their team work and communication skills and fulfil their potential as leaders.

The programme consists of a combination of:

Presentations and Workshops facilitated by community and business leaders particularly focusing on leadership development,
opportunities for the exchange of ideas, opinions and experiences in discussion groups etc,
open sessions, sport and keep fit exercises,
the opportunity to experience and practice leadership skills in action,
involvement in a community activity and with the host Rotary Club programme, hosted in our heartland.

We would love to support two Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki uri into the programme this year, which will be held from Saturday 29th June until Saturday 6th July 2024 at Willowpark Convention Centre, Eastern Beach, Auckland.

Exotic Caulerpa

What is exotic Caulerpa, and why does Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki care about it?

Exotic Caulerpa is an invasive seaweed that colonises the seabed by forming large, dense mats that will kill our native seaweeds that many of our marine species feed off, such as like tāmure and kōura.

Exotic Caulerpa has been found at Aotea/Great Barrier Island (July 2021), Ahuahu/Great Mercury Island (March 2022), Te Rāwhiti, Bay of Islands (May 2023), Kawau Island (July 2023) and Waiheke Island (mid2023).

Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki are joining the fight against the invasive seaweed and have proactively conducted two surveys with the help of Revive Our Gulf and Coast and Catchment.

Surveying our rohe

We first conducted a survey around The Noises (Motuhoropapa, Ōtata, Ahaaha Rocks, David Rocks, and Maria Island) and the north-eastern section of Rākino on the 25 ^th of August. We analysed the footage and thankfully did not spot any exotic Caulerpa. Hūrō!

The second survey we conducted was around the West and East side of Rātōroa and the North and East side of Te Pounui a Peretū (Pōnui Island) on the 16 ^th of November. Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki analysed the footage and again did not spot any exotic Caulerpa.

While we are relieved that we haven’t seen any trace of exotic Caulerpa in our survey areas, we will continue to look out for the invasive species and encourage everyone to be aware of the threat this exotic seaweed poses and to assist us in our efforts to limit its spread.

How you can help

Here are some simple steps you can take to help in the fight against exotic Caulerpa if you're out on the water this summer:

When at sea, before moving to a new location, check your vessel’s anchor, anchor chain, and any other gear which may have come into contact with exotic Caulerpa (e.g fishing line and hooks, dive equipment etc.)
If you find any exotic seaweed attached – remove it , bag it or contain it securely so it can't get back into the water, then take it back ashore for disposal in a rubbish bin.

Please be aware that Aotearoa has its own native species of Caulerpa (C. articulata and C. brownie) however their appearance is very different from the exotic species. This fact sheet from MPI shows the difference between the native and exotic species:

End date: Wednesday 20 ^th December 2023

WHAT WILL BE COVERED:

Pronunciation, basic grammar and sentence structures, karakia, karanga/pao, whaikōrero & mihi, waiata & haka, kawa and tikanga o te marae.

NOTE:

This course is for iwi members who are beginners or who are already familiar with some simple Māori kupu and phrases, and want to improve or deepen their understanding of Te Reo me ngā Tikanga. If you've already completed a Level 4 programme or Takiura, please leave space for others.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki is delighted to be able to offer our first Te Reo Māori scholarships for fulltime study in 2024 at Te Wānanga Takiura o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa, under the tutelage of Papa Tāwhiramātea and Whaea Kaa Williams.

As many people will already know, the success rate for tauira graduating their one year programme is incredible, with tauira being able to present i te Reo Māori for an hour at the end of the 34 week programme. Mīharo!

What is on offer:

1 x Taha Māreikura scholarship (Kaikaranga succession)
1 x Taha Whatukura scholarship (Kaikōrero succession)
Full annual fees paid for by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki
$1000 course related costs paid for by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki

Eligibility criteria:

Must be 20+ yrs old
Must be a registered iwi member with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki
Must be able to attend a fulltime, Monday to Friday kura programme in Tāmaki Makaurau from February 2024 for 34 weeks
Must be prepared to make this journey your priority for the year
Must approve the Kura providing end of term progress reports back to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki
Must be willing to support Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki at iwi kaupapa or at the marae

Maraetai 3B2 Whenua Trustee Elections

Do you want to be involved in the growth and development of our beautiful Umupuia Marae?

The Maraetai 3B2 Whenua Trust, which manages the marae, is currently made up of 5 remaining trustees and the Trust is seeking 4 or more new nominees.

Once established the trustees will work together to develop its operating charter and policies. These trustee roles are voluntary i.e. unpaid.

All uri of our tūpuna Te Whatatau rāua ko Te Raukohekohe are eligible to be nominated, as long as they are registered iwi members, and 20+ years old.

For these governance positions skill sets being sought are in the areas of:

Ngāi Tai reo and tikanga
Administration
Finance
Health and Safety
Audit and Risk
Marae Management
IT and Communications

Appointed Trustees are expected to have sufficient capacity and capability to attend the scheduled hui, and actively contribute to the work of the trust.

Please note, you don’t have to be a trustee to have an active role at the marae e.g. paepae, ringawera etc.

Nominations:

Please nominate your trustee via email to marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz by 5pm Thursday 24th August. Self-nominations are also welcome.

Nominees will be contacted by marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz to provide a brief bio and photo, for collation and distribution to iwi members via email after 24th August.

Voting:

Voting for these candidates will then take place in person at Umupuia Marae on Sunday 27th August, from 2pm to 3pm.

If you cannot attend in person, you may officially register a proxy to cast your vote on your behalf, by emailing the full name and contact details of your proxy to marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz . Your proxy must be a registered iwi member, and must attend in person to place your vote in the ballot box. There is no online voting option.

Te Whakakitenga Representatives

Umupuia Marae is registered as one of the 68 Te Whakakitenga marae supported by Waikato-Tainui. Being part of this roopu provides cover for insurance, marae infrastructure and utilities and other support throughout the year.

We are seeking nominations for TWO representatives plus ONE alternate to represent us at regular Te Whakakitenga hui on our behalf.

These elected members hold their terms on Te Whakakitenga for 3 years and must be registered Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi members, as well as being registered with Waikato-Tainui, listing Umupuia as one of their marae.

As per Te Whakakitenga rules, to be eligible to vote for your preferred representatives you must also be registered with Waikato Tainui, listing Umupuia as one of your marae, and be 18+. If you are not yet registered under Waikato-Tainui, you can do so here: https://waikatotainui.com/register/ Please note, a new registration request may or may not be processed in time to vote in this year's election.

Roles and Responsibilities of Te Whakakitenga Members:

Elected Members of Te Whakakitenga must represent the interests of their marae in all decisions made by Te Whakakitenga. Decisions are determined by votes and each marae is entitled to one vote.
Representatives are directly accountable to their own marae and have a ‘collective responsibility’ to all marae.
Members are expected to make themselves available to attend and participate in meetings, contribute the time necessary to study and understand the papers provided, apply good analytical skills, objectivity, and judgement, and ask questions that go to the fundamental core of the issue.

Important dates as provided by Te Whakakitenga:

3 September 2023 - Nominations for Te Whakakitenga officer, Te Arataura, and committee positions closes. Accordingly, if you want to nominate your Elected Member/s for any of these positions, you will need to have completed your Marae elections by this date.
6 September 2023 - Closing date for receipt of nominee profiles.
16 September 2023 - Briefing for the 2023-2026 term for new and returning members.
30 September 2023 - Triennial Special Meeting.

Registrations are now open for the August event - come along to contribute to the restoration of Motutapu as a sanctuary for taonga species. Volunteering is open to all ages, no experience is required, and lunch and travel is included.

Nau mai, haere mai – join us at Umupuia Marae for a weekend wānanga that will include activities about te Taiao / the natural environment, te maramataka or the lunar calendar and everything it influences, and our unique connection with Tīkapakapa Moana/Hauraki Gulf.

This is a great opportunity to connect with whānau old and new, and Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whānau are invited to come, whether for just the one day or both.

Day 1: Saturday 29 ^th – Guest speakers and hands-on activities related to mātauranga taiao.
Day 2: Sunday 30 ^th – We will look at how we can infuse mātauranga into our mahi with Revive Our Gulf (RoG).

It is my absolute privilege to announce the appointment of our new Tumu Kaimahi/Chief Executive Officer, Jada MacFie. The board is extremely proud of Jada for applying for the position, participating in an intense recruitment process, becoming the preferred candidate and ultimately accepting the role.

Jada has been a board member on the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Trust (PSGE) for several years now and will leave her current position as the Tumu Maiaka - General Manager Connections and People, at the Tāmaki Regeneration Company. Her excellent leadership skills along with her governance and business experience will guide her well in her new role. The board would like to acknowledge the huge support she has from her whānau and extended whānau as this is the embodiment of “by Ngāi Tai, for Ngāi Tai”.

We will have an official handover at Umupuia Marae on the 10 ^th of February 2023 starting at 10am, to acknowledge and celebrate Jada’s achievements and tenure at TRC, welcome her to her new role as CE of the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Group and thank her whānau for their enduring commitment to Jada and the Iwi.

We're excited to introduce Te Huru-Manu, a roundup of what's going on in the

Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki office and across the wider Ngāi Tai Nation.

In this first issue we cover some workstreams that whānau will be able to get involved with in the new year, welcome on board some new staff and trustees, and provide the first version of Ngā Tapuwae Onamata, a map detailing various sites of interest to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki members, which we will continue to add to over time.

Māori Cultural Footprint Wānanga Tuatoru

On Saturday 19 November 2022 we held our Wānanga Tuatoru at Umupuia Marae

The agenda included:

Expert Researchers and Scientists speaking and doing workshops on the important kaupapa of Climate Change and how it affects Te Ao Māori and specifically Ngāi Tai.
Frank Haimona and the kura Mātātoa programme about connecting Tamariki to their environment.
A presentation with VR units about how Climate Change is affecting the Hauraki Gulf.
Facilitated by Kelvin Tapuke.
Ngāi Tai members and rangitahi had the opportunity to learn, discuss ideas and what future steps we could take.

The manuhiri were welcomed onto the marae, followed by a pōhiri.

Sidney Tamati has a contemplative moment.

After our morning tea, the attendees split into 4 groups to go and workshop different aspects of the climate change kaupapa. These where for us to learn about how climate change impacts different areas – whenua, moana, taonga and for us to share thoughts and insights back and forth with the experts.

Ngāi Tai Whanau got to hear directly from specialist scientists and were able to see how Te Ao Māori is connected to climate change, The scientists were able to get thoughts & ideas from Ngāi Tai whanau about what is important for us to consider and where we might want our efforts to go. The range of ages involved made this particularly beneficial for all attendee s.

Akuhata Bailey-Winiata (University of Waikato) took everyone to the beach to learn about sea levels rising.
Andrea Walter (GNS) showed us landslides behind Umupuia and showed us how modelling can help to predict where landslides may occur and how we can protect ourselves and our homes from damage.
We had lessons from Lance Monu (Kia Kaha Digital) in using technology to help us protect our Taonga by ensuring our matauranga is collected and catalogued for use by future generations.
Al Alder spoke to us about the kūtai life cycle and their aspirations for Kūtai Restoration in the Hauraki Gulf.

Frank Haimona from Kura Mātātoa gave us an overview of the programme he runs for tamariki & rangitahi to re-connect to the environment. The kura students gave a demonstration of their hoe skills.

After lunch, we were treated to some excellent presentations from Sidney Tamati – one of our artists.

Professor Andrew Jeffs gave us some real detail about the state of the moana in the Hauraki Gulf and why we need to be taking immediate action to ensure that this unique marine environment can be restored.

“When man becomes the younger brother, nature becomes the elder”

Marama Beamish spoke to us about her work with Auckland Council in the climate change space and gave us a whakataukī describing the Te Ao Māori perspective about taking our lead from the ‘elder’ our environment.

Our last kaupapa was to enjoy the VR Technology of the Blake Foundation. We were treated to a virtual trip around some of our special moana & awa environments.

We got to see how it can look and how pollution and climate change have degraded these.
